Monte Carlo Casino – History & Facts

More than 150 years since its establishment Casino de Monte Carlo is still as classy and glamorous as it used to be. It is owned and operated by Société des Bains de Mer de Monaco, a public company where the government of Monaco and the royal family hold the majority interest. Monte Carlo casino is a gambling and entertainment complex that includes the casino, Opera de Monte Carlo, and Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.

The opening of the casino was actually a financial rescue plan devised by Princess Caroline, who was hoping to save the House of Grimaldi from bankruptcy. She surely did because Casino de Monte Carlo has been the primary source of income for the royal family and Monaco’s economy.

The casino did not succeed right away. It was partly because there was no infrastructure back then – no roads to connect Monaco to Nice and no good accommodation, and partly because of inadequate management. The first casino was opened in 1856. But it was not until 1863, when François Blanc took over the management and Société des Bains de Mer de Monaco was created, that the enterprise became profitable.

There are four casino games offered at Casino de Monte Carlo – Texas Hold’em poker, blackjack, slots, punto banco and their trademark – roulette. There’s also Split Aces, not an individual game, rather an additional bet you can put while playing blackjack. It gives you a chance to win a progressive jackpot starting at €5.000, so we’d say it’s worth the extra €1 on your bet.

Another interesting game offered at Casino Monte Carlo Monaco is punto banco. This is the American version of baccarat that is played at the majority of UK gambling sites but it is almost never labelled as ‘punto banco’. Tomayto, tomahto. You can give it a go at the Salle Europe for a minimum bet of €20.

Of course, the jewel in the crown of this legendary gambling spot is roulette. We’re not sure whether it’s the James Bond movies that made the game so popular or the fact that French Roulette is exclusive to Monte Carlo casino, but some gamblers come to Monaco to play this game alone. And the minimum bet is just €5 – great for all kinds of players.

Casino Monte Carlo Chips

Casino de Monte Carlo Chips

How cool is it to come home with chips from an iconic casino as souvenirs? This is favourite memorabilia even for non-gamblers, to say nothing of poker fans. Casino Monte Caro chips are both a work of art in their own right and a piece of history.

For almost a century now, they have been provided to the casino by Bourgogne et Grasset – a gaming supplies manufacturer set in Beaune, which also makes all other tokens and dice for the table games.

Monte Carlo Casino was the first in history to use a system other than cash for betting. Up to 1927 all Casino de Monte Carlo chips were individually chiselled from mother of pearl, but the material proved too fragile. This was when the casino struck a deal with Bourgogne et Grasset to create more durable synthetic chips inlaid with mother of pearl. This partnership remains strong, and the chips still match the glamour and elegance of the iconic casino.
